Empire Breche d'Alep Marble Table

TAB-026

A beautiful 19th century Empire mahogany veneered table, having a circular Breche D'Alep marble top, and rising on a pedestal with tri-part base.

Brèche d’Alep marble is a rare and luxurious stone originating from Syria, prized for its striking appearance and historical use in fine architecture and decorative arts. It was imported to Europe from the Renaissance onward, but its popularity surged during the 18th and 19th centuries, when exotic and richly colored marbles were in high demand for both architecture and fine furniture.

In the 19th century, especially during the French Empire, Restoration, and later Second Empire periods, Brèche d’Alep was often used for tabletops, commodes, consoles, and mantelpieces. Cabinetmakers and ébénistes prized it for the way its bold mix of reds, ochres, and creams contrasted beautifully with richly veneered woods like mahogany and rosewood. The stone’s dramatic veining gave pieces a luxurious, painterly effect, and because it was expensive to quarry and transport, its use signaled wealth and prestige.
